3 Test Of Assurance

1 John 4:7-12 Beloved, let us love one another: for love is of God; and every one that loveth is born of God, and knoweth God. 8 He that loveth not knoweth not God; for God is love. 9 In this was manifested the love of God toward us, because that God sent his only begotten Son into the world, that we might live through him. 10 Herein is love, not that we loved God, but that he loved us, and sent his Son to be the propitiation for our sins. 11 Beloved, if God so loved us, we ought also to love one another. 12 No man hath seen God at any time. If we love one another, God dwelleth in us, and his love is perfected in us. 13 Hereby know we that we dwell in him, and he in us, because he hath given us of his Spirit.

3 Tests of Assurance

1. Possession of the Holy Spirit

a. Ephesians 1:13 In whom ye also trusted, after that ye heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation: in whom also after that ye believed, ye were sealed with that holy Spirit of promise,

b. 1 John 3:24 And he that keepeth his commandments dwelleth in him, and he in him. And hereby we know that he abideth in us, by the Spirit which he hath given us.

i. Subjectively – we just know that the Spirit is in us and we are saved

ii. Objectively-

1. We have a desire to grow

-Colossians 3:13- If ye then be risen with Christ, seek those things which are above, where Christ sitteth on the right hand of God. 2 Set your affection on things above, not on things on the earth. 3 For ye are dead, and your life is hid with Christ in God.

2. We have conviction of sin

-1 John 3:9- Whosoever is born of God doth not commit sin; for his seed remaineth in him: and he cannot sin, because he is born of God.

3. We have the fruit of the Spirit

Galatians 2:22-23- But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, 23 Meekness, temperance: against such there is no law.

2. The Confession of Jesus Christ

1 John 1:1-3- That which was from the beginning, which we have heard, which we have seen with our eyes, which we have looked upon, and our hands have handled, of the Word of life; 2 (For the life was manifested, and we have seen it, and bear witness, and shew unto you that eternal life, which was with the Father, and was manifested unto us;) 3 That which we have seen and heard declare we unto you, that ye also may have fellowship with us: and truly our fellowship is with the Father, and with his Son Jesus Christ.

People who are saved are people who confess that Jesus Christ is the only way of salvation.

3. The Love of God

If we love one another, God dwelleth in us, and his love is perfected in us.

a. Love is the nature of God (7)

We cannot know true “love” apart from God giving us this understanding

b. God’s nature is given to all believers (8)

When we accept Christ as our Savior, we can love as he loves. Unsaved people cannot do this.

c. God has loved us through his Son (9)

Praise the Lord for God’s great expression of love in giving his only Son to die for us.
